Kaulder is an immortal witch hunter who has spent centuries tracking down those who practice evil magic. When history's deadliest witches resurrect their bloodthirsty Queen Witch, Kaulder becomes humanity's last hope as he clashes with the supernatural in an epic battle for the ages.

I never caught 'The Last Witch Hunter' on its initial theatrical release. Judging by the initial reaction I dodged a bullet. Perhaps my expectations were too low, but visiting it for the first time I must say it wasn't as horrible as I was imagining. Sure, Vin Diesel's stone-like presence isn't great for a film like this, and sure the information surrounding his abilities as a witch hunter are murky. Yet, there's enough there to hold interest, which is more than I thought would be possible.

It's a curse because Kaulder has to live on eternally with the memory of his wife and daughter who were killed by the witch. This is the type of emoting that escapes a Vin Diesel performance. He's great in the 'Fast and Furious' movies because Dominic Toretto is more, or less, Diesel. When he's called upon to offer up a bit more emotion his performances usually fall flat. That's the case here. Kaulder has a tortured past, but Diesel is unable to convey that through his emotions. So, while it may be a curse for him to live on and on with the memory of his murdered family, that sort of pain never comes across in Diesel's acting.

The most interesting aspect of the movie is its mythology. After Kaulder's curse, he becomes a witch hunter. A secret religious sect has been tasked with keeping him safe while he works in conjunction with the witch counsel. His job is to hunt down the bad witches and bring them in for justice so witches can live in harmony with humans.

The movie's weaknesses are many though. While the mythology surrounding the witches, Kaulder, and the witch counsel is intriguing, we're left wondering just what makes Kaulder so special. He's able to heal fast, but we're never told why he's so great at catching witches. It would seem that his entire witch-hunting repertoire boils down to running and tackling witches before they can cast dastardly spells. Unlike Blade, Kaulder doesn't carry around any special weaponry. A shotgun and an ancient sword from his early days as a witch hunter, that's it. He knows the tricks of the trade, but his expertise is fuzzy.

The Last Witch Hunter is a 2015 American fantasy action film directed by Breck Eisner and written by Cory Goodman, Matt Sazama, and Burk Sharpless. The film stars Vin Diesel as an immortal witch hunter who must stop a plague from ravaging the entire world.[6] The film was released on October 23, 2015, grossing $147 million while receiving generally unfavorable reviews from critics.

In the present day, Kaulder prevents a teenage witch from unintentionally destroying an airplane with weather-controlling runes. Kaulder is revealed to be working as a witch hunter for an organization called the Axe and Cross, which aims to keep the truce between humans and witches and either executes or imprisons the witches who break the law. He is aided by a priest called "Dolan", a tradition carried from the battle to destroy the Witch Queen.

Screenwriter Corey Goodman was largely influenced by talks with Vin Diesel, specifically about his Dungeons & Dragons witch hunter character.[7] Initially Timur Bekmambetov was to direct but was later replaced by Breck Eisner and Goodman's script was re-written by D.W. Harper before Melisa Wallack was brought on to work on the film's script.[8][9] Both were uncredited. The production filed for a film tax credit in Pennsylvania and was allocated a tax credit of $14 million.[10][11] In February 2014, Vin Diesel posted a photo of the film's concept artwork to his Facebook page and Lionsgate CEO Jon Feitheimer commented that if successful, The Last Witch Hunter could become a film franchise.[12] In March 2014, Lakeshore Entertainment boarded the film as co-financier with Lionsgate, but Lakeshore quietly left the project. In July 2014, it was announced that Rose Leslie would be joining the cast as Vin Diesel's co-star,[13] and in August, Elijah Wood, Michael Caine, and Ólafur Darri Ólafsson were also announced as attached to the film.[14][15][16] Julie Engelbrecht and Lotte Verbeek will also star.[17][18] In February 2015, Steve Jablonsky was hired to compose the film's score.

Around Eight hundred years ago, the Witch Queen unleashes the black plague upon the local population. The only thing to stop her succeeding are the witch hunters. During the battle Kaulder (Vin Diesel) kills the Witch Queen but she curses him with immortality before dying.

Every minute of this movie is filled with exposition about the many different laws and sects of witches who live in secrecy among us, so much so that it becomes impossible not to laugh endearingly at its ambitious struggle to be taken seriously as a viable fantasy franchise starter, the way one would laugh at a toddler who thinks they're an astrophysicist simply because their daddy bought them a space shuttle toy for the holidays.

By the time Diesel's badass witch hunter begins giving a woefully overcomplicated monologue (Because when you need a comprehensible delivery of an overcomplicated monologue, you hire the Diesel) about a set of ancient witch stones that control the weather, you'd have to be a humorless square to not crack a smile at the schlocky stupidity on display.

Diesel plays Blade, sorry, Kaulder, an 800-year-old witch hunter cursed with immortality by a powerful witch he once slayed. In present time, he helps an underground team of priests hunt down witches who break the super secret truce that was once made between humans and "those with magic". When Dolan (Michael Caine, who looks visibly bored in yet another Alfred-type role), Kaulder's current sidekick in a series of priest sidekicks, ends up murdered by a mysterious evil witch, Kaulder realizes that he might have to face the forces of evil that forced him to become a witch hunter in the first place.

Animated Short Films: Four animated shorts, clocking in at around 9 minutes total, that expand on the film's mythology. The first one uses the voice-over from the beginning of the film. I wonder if it was recorded for the animated short first, and was inserted into the movie at the last minute, because it feels very awkward in the finished film. The 2D, hand-drawn animation style here is beautiful, far more creative than anything in the feature itself.

It may not look like anything special, but perhaps it will be a fun trip to the movies as Halloween gets closer. Surely it will be worth watching just to see what quips Diesel spouts off while he's cutting down witches and monsters with that flaming sword. Diesel delivers an earnest and intense performance however this is not enough to save this film. It seems to have taken ideas from every horror/fantasy film in the last 10 years and put them all into one movie. Overloaded with CGI, the film seems to skip from plot to plot.

Thankfully the cinematographer avoided the usual blue/black palette so common in films of this genre (for the most part). Instead there is a warm, almost autumn tone for most of the movie that makes it easier to watch and demonstrates the relationship between witches and nature.

In 2015, Diesel starred in The Last Witch Hunter, a dark fantasy action film directed by Breck Eisner. Within the film, Diesel portrays, Kaulder a witch hunter who was cursed by the Witch Queen with eternal life. Across the ages, Kaulder continued to hunt witches until the present day, when Kaulder finds himself in a race against time to prevent the Witch Queen from returning! Elijah Wood Rose Leslie, Julie Engelbrecht, Michael Caine co-star in the movie with Diesel.

The modern world holds many secrets, but by far the most astounding is that witches still live among us; vicious supernatural creatures intent on unleashing the Black Death upon the world and putting an end to the human race once and for all. Armies of witch hunters have battled this unnatural enemy for centuries, including Kaulder, a valiant warrior who many years ago slayed the all-powerful Witch Queen, decimating her followers in the process. In the moments right before her death, the Queen cursed Kaulder with immortality, forever separating him from his beloved wife and daughter. Today, Kaulder is the last living hunter who has spent his immortal life tracking down rogue witches, all the while yearning for his long-lost family. 2ff7e9595c
