I like to make my homemade sauces in small batches so there are no leftovers because having a million half-used homemade sauces in your fridge is just as annoying as having a million half-used bottled sauces in your fridge. The recipe below makes about 1/2 cup of sauce, but can easily be doubled or tripled if needed. Simply adjust the number of servings in the servings box in the recipe card and all of the ingredient quantities will adjust for you. There will be no change to the cooking method.
In most fast food take out restaurants, the red color of the sweet and sour sauce is nothing more than red food coloring. In the recipe below, I use a little ketchup, which not only makes the sauce red, but adds even more sweet and sour flavor (ketchup has both sugar and vinegar). Two birds with one stone!

Homemade sauce is far less sweet, it tastes cleaner and you get to balance out the flavors to your taste if you want yours more tangy, or more sweet, or, if you like things spicy, add a dash of heat!!
Oh my days! This sauce is fabulous and so easy to make.I made it as the original recipe but was too tangy so i added a spoon of honey and it was perfect.I have some breaded chicken strips in my freezer which i will cook and serve over rice with this sauce drizzled ( or maybe poured ) over it!!!Thank you, this is amazing.
Also- we have gone to Kobe Japanese Rest in Addison Texas for 30+ years. They closed due to pandemic. They had a Ginger sauce that was for dipping vegetables but we used it for everything. My kids grew up on it and we all miss it. It does not taste the same anywhere else and we have been searching. They gave me a recipe 30 years ago but i cannot find it. It contained the following but I do not recall the portions: fresh Ginger, soy sauce, white onion, white sugar and water. Any chance you have a recipe? My family and I would be so grateful.
This recipe was inspired by both our basic sweet and sour sauce recipe and the sauce for our sweet and sour fish. I tried to combine both and added a little tweak to come-up with this recipe. Sure, this is easy and simple. It is also useful especially if you decide to store it in a glass jar with lid (ball jars). You will be able to use this for a couple of weeks or more as long as you store it properly.
Use a cornstarch slurry to thicken the sauce plus a little time boiling. If the recipe is not as thick as you want it to be you can add a little more of the slurry at a time until you reach your desired thickness.
Sweet and Sour Sauce is a sauce made by combining a sweet component and a sour component with cornstarch as the thickening agent. Some of the common sweet components are brown sugar, granulated white sugar, and honey. Rice vinegar, white vinegar, apple-cider vinegar, and pineapple juice are some of the common ingredients used as sour component. This sweet and sour recipe will give you a good sauce with the right balance of flavors.

For a great Chinese dinner at home, serve your favorite frozen appetizers like crab rangoon and spring rolls with this sweet and sour sauce. Then for dinner, make a batch of this udon noodles sauce, a shrimp stir fry with this stir fry sauce, sweet and sour chicken using this sauce, and some fried rice with a side of sweet chili sauce. Takeout might be easier, but this will be better!
There's no need to go to the grocery store when you can make this homemade sweet and sour sauce in minutes with a few simple ingredients. Plus it's vegan, gluten-free, and easily made refined sugar-free too!
The sweet and sour sauce that you get at a restaurant usually has added red food coloring. If you don't mind yours not being as red, the ketchup in the sauce will color it nicely. If you want yours to look like store-bought sweet and sour sauce, then add a few drops of red food dye.
You can use this sauce to make any of your favorite sweet and sour dishes like sweet and sour tofu or use it as a dipping sauce for vegan chicken nuggets, tofu spring rolls, fried cauliflower, fried tofu, or vegan meatballs. Drizzle this tasty sauce over a vegetable stir fry or vegan shrimp for a mock sweet and sour shrimp.
My sauce turned out very sharp with vinegar taste. I went through the recipe over and over to make sure ingredients were right! Is there a way to balance it out with other ingredients! I like it other than vinegar too strong!
I put this sauce over your fried cauliflower to make sweet and sour cauliflower and it was delicious! Some sweet and sour recipes that I've tried in the past have been too sweet, but this was perfect!

I made this 2x the amount cuz I like it saucey! Also added cayenne pepper and crushed red pepper flakes which spices things up a bit and makes it very close to how I like it at my local Chinese spot! Thanks for the recipe beautiful!
I doubled this and came out with desired amount of sauce for a wok of stir fry. I added 4 tablespoons of cornstarch and thickness was about right as I felt 2 teaspoons would be too thin for my liking. I also added some red pepper flakes. But overall, a good, EASY and versatile sweet and sour sauce recipe.
1/2 cup ketchup 1 tsp soy sauce 1/3 cup white vinegar 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed (can reduce to 1/3 cup) 1 cup white sugar (for less sweet taste, reduce a few tablespoons) 3/4 cup cold water (or half pineapple juice and half water) I used pineapple juice and it turned out great 4 to 5 Tbsp cornstarch (5 makes a pretty thick sauce) 2ff7e9595c
